I have digested the news and think my initial reaction was a little extreme.
I’ve been giving my reaction a little thought, too- as someone pointed out to me, both the movies and the BBC series do not feature Sherlock & Watson as openly gay- but while I probably could be more tolerant of the idea of “Joan” Watson (and I really do love Lucy Liu) I can’t quite get away from the fact that American primetime is known for shipping their leads. If it stars a male and a female, they’re going to have romantic feelings for each other. It’s actually a really sore point for me, but the point is if they’re going to ship their leads (and I see this as being an inevitable fact) then why not keep it as two males? Or as beeftony suggested, make Sherlock a girl, too? That way the show is still new and different and it avoids the stereotype of man + woman = UST. Make it a new stereotype of woman + woman = UST. ;)
Or- and here’s a wildly insane theory- just let them be friends. Whatever gender they are, just friends. No hints of romance, no sly, tongue-in-cheek references, no constant denials that they’re a pair, just let them be friends and get on with the damn job. That, I think, would be my ideal scenario: pure, unadulterated friendship.
Right. And maybe Sherlock will ride a unicorn through the streets of New York, singing up rainbows wherever he goes.
